Doug Ummel

      Doug Ummel, CFP®
Financial Advisor

Originally licensed in 1997, Doug Ummel has over 20 years of experience advising individuals and institutions on how to grow and preserve their assets. Doug began his career with Morgan Stanley Dean Witter in Nashville, Tennessee. He was part of a large, institutional team that managed over $9 billion and employed many advanced tactics at the time in portfolio management. Therefore he spent the early part of his career learning to solve complex investment planning and qualified plan issues. Doug tells people that he grew up in the business learning how to manage money, not being taught how to sell people something.

After six years of working with large institutional pools of money, Doug decided to apply his skills to help individuals and families steward their resources responsibly. By his own admission, he "didn't get into the business to help turn $200 million into $500 million, but rather to help people be good stewards of what they have been given." For this reason, Doug obtained his Certified Financial Planner ™ (CFP®) designation and left Morgan Stanley to start a practice at Raymond James where he could focus on helping individuals and families. This led him to become one of the Dave Ramsey Endorsed Local Providers for investment services in Nashville, Tennessee.

In 2007, Doug moved his family and his practice to Bloomington, Indiana, as he liked the town and his wife's family was in Bloomington. Given his extensive experience in portfolio construction and analysis, Doug spends a good portion of his time in front of spreadsheets and reports, analyzing the financial situations of clients and the portfolios and investments that he recommends. Additionally, Doug employs his CFP® training to assist in creating, overseeing, and implementing comprehensive wealth management plans for clients. Doug is currently a Dave Ramsey Smartvestor recommended investment professional.

Outside of the office, Doug raises children, volunteers, and teaches on financial principles in the community. He and his wife Heather adopted one of their children from Ethiopia. Adoption is a cause near and dear to their hearts. The father of six, much of his down time is taken by simply being a good husband and father. He enjoys coaching soccer teams, helping with homework, and working on his 8.5 acres with his three sons and three daughters. Doug is active in the community, serving on a number of boards and volunteering his time locally and at his church, where he serves as the chairman of the deacon board.

Doug's first meeting is always a “fit” meeting. He asks that no decisions be made at this meeting, rather, that he and his prospective clients be able to take some time to get to know one another. He believes strongly that in order for there to be a good long term working relationship, there needs to be a good fit on both sides. As such, he will not bring on a new client if he doesn't feel that he can add significant value to their situation. Doug also feels it extremely important that his clients understand their investments and situation and so uses his “heart of a teacher” to educate them as they work together.
